Love Handles: A Common Body Contouring Focus

Love handles are one of the most common areas clients like to focus on at Verde Laser Clinic. The term generally refers to the fullness or contour around the sides of the midsection, often around the area above the hips or near the waistband.

For some people, this is one particular area they would like to address more specifically. For others, it forms part of a broader body contouring plan that may also include several areas.

Understanding the love handle area

The sides of the midsection can have a noticeable influence on the overall contour of the body, particularly through the transition between the waist, hips and lower torso.

People tend to refer to this area in different ways. One person may call it their love handles, while another may refer to the sides of their stomach, the area above the hips, around the waistband or simply the sides of the midsection.

What someone means by “love handles” can therefore be quite specific or extend more broadly through the middle of the body.

Identifying the area you want to focus on

You do not need to know the exact anatomical term before booking an appointment with Verde Laser Clinic. During your consultation, you can simply show us the area you would like to focus on and talk through what you are hoping to address.

For some clients, love handles may be the only area they want to focus on. For others, they may be one of several areas included in a broader body contouring plan, alongside areas such as the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, hips or chin. The combination can be very different from person to person, depending on the areas they are most interested in focusing on.

Emerald Laser Therapy and body circumference reduction

At Verde, we use Emerald® Laser Therapy, a form of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), for non-invasive body circumference reduction. Emerald uses low intensity green laser light and is indicated as a non-invasive treatment for the reduction of body circumference.

Low Level Laser Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with subcutaneous adipose tissue without relying on heat. More broadly, photobiomodulation is associated with cellular processes, including mitochondrial activity and ATP production, which supports normal cellular function. This type of photochemical interaction differs from body contouring technologies that rely on heating or freezing tissue. Emerald is designed to complement a healthy lifestyle, with a healthy, calorie controlled diet and regular physical activity recommended alongside treatment.

Looking at the midsection from different angles

The contour around the sides of the body can look different from the front, side and back. This is one reason some people may notice the area differently depending on clothing or the angle they are viewing themselves from.

At Verde, we use Styku 3D body scanning to give a more detailed view of body shape and circumference over time. The 3D model can be rotated and viewed from different angles, while individual circumference measurements can be selected and compared between scans. We also look at cross sections through specific areas of the body, providing a top down view of the contour at that measurement point.

When multiple scans are available, they can be viewed side by side and rotated together, making it easier to compare body shape from the same perspective. Cross section overlays can also be used to compare the shape of a particular area between scans, alongside changes in circumference measurements and the overall 3D body model. This gives us a clear way to monitor any measurable changes through the love handle area over the course of a treatment plan.
